Identity: The aspects and characteristics that make up our definition of self and that society defines us by
Social Justice: The process of social justice involves an equitable distribution of resources, equal access to these resources, and participation from all members of society. The goal of social justice is the full and equal participation of all groups in a society shaped to meet their needs.
Microaggression: Subtle, verbal and nonverbal slights, insults, and belittling messages directed towards an individual due to their group identity, often automatically and unconsciously. Usually committed by well-intentioned folks who are unaware of the hidden messages being communicated
Q: How do you address these comments?
A: Address the comments; do not attack the person. Explain why the comment, even if it was not intended to be offensive, is hurtful.Examples:
"That could have offended someone."
"Putting people down is not funny."
"What if you were _______, how would that make you feel?"
Goal: To help people see how their words impact others. Every student, staff, and faculty member should feel welcome on our campus regardless of their identity, life experience, or background.
